Privacy Policy

Last updated: December 16, 2024

1. Introduction

Welcome to ProLiveEditor ("we," "our," or "us"). We are committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how your information is collected, used, and disclosed by ProLiveEditor.

2. Data Storage (Free Tier)

Local Storage Only: For free users, all data is stored locally on your device using your browser's localStorage. This includes:

  • Your Code: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Markdown content you write in the editor
  • Editor Preferences: Layout settings, visible panes, language modes (CSS/SCSS, JS/TypeScript)
  • CDN Libraries: External libraries you've added to your project

Important: Since data is stored in your browser's localStorage:

  • Your data is NOT backed up to any server
  • Clearing your browser cache/data will permanently delete your saved code
  • Your data is only accessible from the same browser and device
  • We cannot recover lost data as we do not have access to it

Your code stays private on your own device. We do not have access to it, and it is never sent to our servers. One thing to be aware of: when you use the Share button, your code is compressed into the share URL itself, so anyone you give that link to can read it.

3. Accounts

Accounts are optional. The editor works fully without one, and creating an account does not change how your code is stored — that stays in your browser until cloud saving ships.

If you sign in with Google, we receive and store the following from your Google profile:

  • Email address: identifies your account and is how we would contact you about it
  • Display name and profile photo: shown in the site's navigation so you can see you are signed in
  • Account timestamps: when the account was created and last used

We never receive your Google password. You can sign out at any time from the account menu, and you can ask us to delete your account and its data using the contact details at the end of this policy.

Premium (planned): a paid tier will add cloud-stored projects and will involve payment information processed by a third-party payment provider — we would not store card details ourselves. We will update this policy with the specifics before that launches.

4. Advertising, Affiliate Links and Cookies

ProLiveEditor is free to use and supported by advertising. We use third-party advertising companies (Google AdSense) to serve ads when you visit our website.

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites
  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your browsing history
  • Ads appear on our blog and documentation pages. The editor itself is kept ad-free so it does not interfere with your work
  • Premium users (when available) will have an ad-free experience across the whole site

Affiliate Links:

Some articles on our blog recommend third-party products such as hosting providers, domain registrars and online courses. Some of those links are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you sign up through them, at no additional cost to you. Blocks containing affiliate links are labelled as such where they appear, and affiliate links carry a rel="sponsored" attribute. We only recommend products we would recommend anyway, and a commission never changes what we write about them. Clicking an affiliate link takes you to the partner's own site, where their privacy policy and cookies apply.

Your Choices:

  • Opt out of personalized advertising at Google Ads Settings
  • Opt out of third-party cookies at aboutads.info
  • Use browser settings to manage or block cookies
  • Navigate to a partner's site directly instead of using our links, if you prefer

5. Analytics

We may use analytics services to understand how users interact with ProLiveEditor. This helps us improve the product. Analytics data is aggregated and does not personally identify you. This may include:

  • Pages visited and time spent on the site
  • Browser type and device information
  • General geographic location (country/region level)
  • Referral sources

6. Third-Party Services

ProLiveEditor integrates with third-party services to enhance functionality:

  • CDN Libraries: When you add external libraries, requests are made to cdnjs.com or unpkg.com/npmjs.org
  • Monaco Editor: The code editor is loaded from Microsoft's CDN
  • Google Fonts: Fonts may be loaded from Google's servers

These services have their own privacy policies. We are not responsible for their data practices.

7. Data Security

For free users, your data never leaves your device, providing inherent security. For future Pro users, we will implement industry-standard security measures including:

  • Encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS)
  • Encryption at rest for stored data
  • Secure authentication practices
  • Regular security audits

8. Children's Privacy

ProLiveEditor is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.

9. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights regarding your personal data:

  • Access: Request a copy of data we hold about you
  • Deletion: Request deletion of your data (for Pro users when available)
  • Portability: Export your data in a standard format
  • Opt-out: Opt out of marketing communications and personalized ads

For free users, you can delete all locally stored data by clearing your browser's localStorage for this site.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, particularly when we launch Pro features. We will notify you of significant changes by posting a notice on our website and updating the "Last updated" date. Continued use of ProLiveEditor after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
